Boxing divisional rankings: Moses Itauma makes massive impression at heavyweight

It's time to start taking Moses Itauma seriously as a heavyweight contender.

Itauma, 20, made short work of onetime title challenger Dillian Whyte with a first-round knockout on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Itauma (14-0, 12 KOs) clobbered Whyte with a series of violent punches that put the "The Body Snatcher" away in under two minutes. It was the eighth first-round finish of Itauma's young career and his most impressive to date.

Whyte, 37, is past his prime but had previously lost only to world champions and had never been finished as quickly as he was by Itauma. The sky is the limit for Itauma, who moves up to No. 8 in the heavyweight rankings.

Also on Saturday in Riyadh, Nick Ball (23-0-1, 13 KOs) retained his WBA featherweight title with a closely contested decision win over Sam Goodman. The scores didn't reflect the competitive nature of the fight. Although it was a unanimous decision with scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 115-113, Goodman proved to be a tough out. Every round was relatively close, with Ball pulling away late with power punching that neutralized Goodman's jab and movement. Ball holds firm as ESPN's No. 1 featherweight.

On that same fight card, Filip Hrgovic survived a nasty cut on his left eyelid to take a decision over David Adeleye. The bout produced a Round 8 that will be in the conversation for round of the year, as Adeleye pulled himself off the canvas and exchanged leather until the bell. Hrgovic was the sharper boxer and, with the win, sits at No. 7 in the heavyweight division. Also, Ray Ford won by unanimous decision over Abraham Nova. It was Ford's third consecutive fight at junior lightweight since losing the WBA featherweight title to Ball last year. Ford remains at No. 4 in the junior lightweight division and is inching closer to a title fight.

ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.

Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to reenter the rankings after his next bout.
